Nearly a decade ago I had a vision. It involved books being distributed all around the world. At the time I had no idea what those books were or even why I was envisioning them. All I knew was that it was something I was to follow…to hold to…to pursue. It was my future, and I needed to find out what that future held.
I suppose when I think about it, I’ve always been a bit of a dreamer. I’ve certainly never lacked in the imagination department. And I’ve always been the type who wanted to better myself. To make tomorrow a little bit better than today. Back in the day, I’d read hundreds of self-help books, attended seminars, watched all the DVDs and listened to countless CDs. I was thirsty for knowledge and eager to achieve the results all those great resources promised.
Yet, no matter how many books I read, events I attended or inspirational talks I watched or listened to, I never seemed to actually get the results I wanted. Every day – despite my good intentions – was very much like the day before and I found that as time went by, I was no closer to that “better me” I longed to reach.
That’s when I had an epiphany, and it all started with that vision of books. I realized that I could study every self-help guru on the planet and meditate on everything I’d learned over the years, but unless I actually took that information and put it into action, I was never going to get anywhere. That was when I discovered the power of applied knowledge.
I decided the first step was to write down my vision. That made it a little more real. I still didn’t have any idea what it meant, but now that I’d documented it, at least I had something to work with. Then, I started tapping into the information I’d collected over the years and applying it to my vision. I started journaling, every day. It really was that simple.
But I’ll be honest – it wasn’t easy, by any means. Working toward a vision that was so vague even I wasn’t sure what it meant – that’s tough. But I never gave up. I held to that dream. I applied the knowledge I’d gained through all those self-help resources and I kept pushing forward, through all the twists and turns and the highs and lows.
Along with my journaling, I started creating a kind of daily ritual of 7 or 8 things I did every single day towards my personal growth and setting daily goals. Most of the time, they were small and relatively easy to achieve. The truth is, it didn’t matter what those goals were. What mattered was that I was holding myself accountable. I was embracing my vision and exploring where it led me.
And guess what? It worked. I used my same daily ritual that I used to create results and put it into a practical guide that other's could use and benefit from.
